Length of Procedure
Patients for the ARTAS robotic hair transplant typically already are experiencing permanent balding and hair thinning. The patient should have a healthy set of hair in their donor sites, since the hair follicles will be extracted from that region and implanted onto the designated area.
Gone are the days of strip grafting. Patients previously would have a strip of skin removed from the back of the head. The skin strip would contain healthy hair follicles which hair specialists carefully extracted and harvested. These would then be placed onto the area where the patient would like hair growth to occur. The FUE hair transplant and ARTAS removes the necessity of strip grafting.
FUE hair transplantation, stands for Follicular Unit Extraction and the ARTAS is mechanical system that uses a small rotary punch to harvest the individual hair follicles, including the shafts and root systems they share.
Today patients can have hair transplant done much less painfully with faster recovery time and minimal scarring. The scars will not be noticeable to most people – even at shorter hair settings.

The doctor will carefully examine the hair follicles on the back of your scalp and other potential areas for hair transplantation. These follicles will be determined if they are healthy and viable for the site it will be injected in. The hair restoration design that you have developed with Dr. Mulholland will be marked out for you in preparation to the procedure and again in collaboration with you on the day of the procedure.
The Artas Robot uses computerized tracking and robotic control to ensure accurate extraction. After administration of local anesthesia, the hair technicians spend the initial portion of the robotic harvest setting the angle and depth for the robot to follow.
Once this is done, then the computerized tracking system allows accurate “coring” of the follicular unit grafts.
After all the grafts have been harvested they are then implanted with a “stick and place” dense packing technique by the hair specialists.
The Artas method avoids the unsightly scar found in the Strip Graft procedure, allowing the patient to wear their hair short, avoid the linear scar and, most importantly come back to harvest more grafts over time, as hair continues to thin. There is almost no pain with the Artas, as there has been no sutures used. The very tiny harvest holes and recipient slits are more itchy thanpainful.
Risks and Complications
The risks and complications for the Artas hair transplant are adverse effects to the anesthesia. Though the Artas is not unbearably painful, patients will find their head itchy.
After Care Instructions and Expectations
Most patients will require one week off from work, unless working from home. The first 2-3 days the door site is covered in a head wrap. The wrap is removed by the third day and gentle hair washing and shampooing using a glass of water and fingertip as demonstrated and advised by the doctor.
The tiny donor harvest sites are difficult to even see by one week, and if the recipient site is covered by existing genetic hair, patients can often return to work. If there is very little normal, genetic hair to hide the transplants, it is often a good option to shave the top of the head in the recipient site to allow the grafts and normal genetic hair to grow out together, in which case the recipient will often look acceptable, without scabs in 10 days.
Growth of the grafts occurs in two phases. First phase growth includes 40-60% of the transplanted hair grafts surviving, picking up a blood supply and beginning growth within 3-4 weeks. After the bulbs “take” by picking up a blood supply, approximately 40-50% of the transplanted shafts will go into “shock hair”, fall out and start to grow again about 4-6 months. So hair transplantation patients undergoing the Artas hair transplantation procedure can often expect good visible hair density enhancement in the first 3-4 months, which is then followed by second phase growth starting at 4-6 months. Over 85% of all grafts take and it is not until 12-14 months that the final density and aesthetic appearance of the hair can be seen.

Patients should expect vibrant and fuller hair after a year. Patients are highly advised to be patient because it will take up to a year for your hair growth to occur. Your results will also be dependent upon how many follicles were grafted to ensure your full set of hair.
Please be realistic in the results you achieve. Despite the high success rate with our hair transplant procedure and ARTAS, the procedure does not guarantee a full set of hair.
