Good Candidates

Good candidates are male patients who have areas of excess fat and glandular tissue under the breasts. You may be candidate for liposuction of the male breast if:

  • You wish to change and flatten the contours of your chest
  • Near ideal weight or slightly overweight, and desire a flatter, more masculine looking chest by reduction of male breast tissue and contouring of pectorals major muscle.
  • You are seeking newer and aesthetically defined chest.

Pre-Operative Consultation

Male gynecomastia can arise from excessive amounts of fat in the male breast that can develop as a result of hereditary issues, diet and environmental factors. It can also occur from an increased growth in male glandular breast tissue.

Although breast cancer in men is uncommon, just like female breast surgery, pre-operative evaluation mammography and imaging are important to rule out any abnormalities that may be serious and require medical therapy.

Procedure

Once it is established that you are a candidate for male gynecomastia surgery, the procedure is most often performed under IV sedation and local anesthetic. General anesthesia is not usually required for male breast reduction surgery.

For significant over development and droopiness of the breast, a formal breast lift mastopexy (removal and lift) procedure may be required. The breast lift mastopexy scar extends around and then under the areola to the under fold of the breast. Scarring can be significant from this treatment approach, so more minimal access male gynecomastia breast reduction incisions and approaches are preferable.

Traditional liposuction (SAL) may be preformed to remove the non glandular fatty tissue components of the male gynecomastia, which has the advantages of minimal scarring. Some surgeons combine this with a small incision around the areola with direct excision of the glandular tissue under the areola.

Newer techniques such as SmartLipo, Vaser or BreastTite may be used. All of these minimally invasive, small incision options involve inserting a cannula and probe through a small access port into the breast tissue. Removal and extraction of the breast and fatty tissue follows. Heat to the under surface of the skin in the male breast results in significant decrease for big scars.

At the completion of your male gynecomastia breast reduction procedure, the postoperative treatment of the scars occurs in our laser medical skincare spa using low level laser light for rapid improvement and minimization of post liposuction irregularities are part of your package.

The SpaMedica Toronto Cosmetic Surgery Facility is a 24 hour overnight stay facility certified by the Canadian Association of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities. Most patients do not require overnight care, but male gynecomastia breast reduction patients who do other ancillary treatments and procedures such as BodyTite™ liposuction for love handles, abdomen, or VASER® liposuction and SmartLipo may require overnight stay and constant monitoring in our safe and certified facility.
