Small Earlobes

Summary

Small earlobes typically occur from undergrowth of ear lobule tissues during adolescence. This earlobe undergrowth is often hereditary in nature, although small earlobes can occur from traumatic disruption and surgical repair of a normally shaped and sized earlobe.

Generally, small earlobes can be aesthetically displeasing as they detract from the overall aesthetics and proportion of the ear and side of the face, as well as being functionally limiting. The ear lobule augmentation can be performed with micro fat grafts and after injection ear lobule augmentation, earrings can be worn within two to three days.

Are You a Candidate?

Patients with small earlobes suffer from a relatively common aesthetic disproportion, specifically earlobes that are too small for the existing ear anatomy and facial aesthetics.

Procedure Details

At SpaMedica, patients with small earlobes can be treated by Toronto cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Stephen Mulholland, with a variety of techniques.

Soft Tissue and Dermal Fillers

One of the most common and simplest techniques to treat small earlobes is injection of soft tissue dermal fillers. Injection of soft tissue dermal fillers into the earlobe is a simple procedure performed under local anesthesia. The soft tissue gels are safe hyaluronic acid sugar gels, specifically, Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, Teosyal or Voluma. The soft tissue gel expands the ear lobule and shape to improve both the contour and size of the ear lobule, creating a more balanced and proportional ear, ear lobule and facial appearance. There is little to no recovery from this injection ear lobule augmentation procedure. Results can last up to two years and patients can return to normal activities almost immediately.

Fat Grafting

There is a natural alternative to soft tissue and dermal injectable fillers available and it utilizes your body’s own fat through a grafting procedure.  The risk for an allergic reaction is reduced significantly, if not completely eliminated.  Fat grafts are performed by extracting.

Additional Procedures

The treatment of small ear lobules with injection lobule augmentation will generally last up to two years and repeat lobule injections can be performed at that time to maintain the results.
